There is no mention of angels or their creation in Genesis 1. It is probable their creation occurred sometime prior to the third day since they were present when the "foundations of the earth" were laid, possibly a reference to the establishment of solid land surfaces on the earth.
The Bible does provide information concerning their creation however.
- The fact of their creation
- They did not evolve from some lower or less complex form of life
- Psalm 149:1-5 "Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created."
- When created, they were created as angels. They were not the result of procreation.
- Matthew 22:30 "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in heaven"
- The agent of their creation
- All things were created by Jesus Christ
- John 1:1-3 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
- Colossians 1:16 "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
- The time of their creation
- The time of their creation is not without debate. The Bible does indicate, however, they were present when the earth was created.
- Job 38:7 "Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the cornerstone thereof? When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"
- The state of their creation
- Angelic creatures were originally created holy
- Genesis 1:31 "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day."
- After sin entered the world, God's good angels (those who did not rebel against Him" are called holy
- Mark 8:38 "For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
- The elect angels
- 1 Timothy 5:21 "In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality."
- The evil angels who followed Satan in rebellion against God
- Matthew 25:41 "Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."
- Angels are a separate order of creatures, distinct from human beings
- Hebrews 1:14 "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"
- Angels are limited in power, knowledge and activity
- 1 Peter 1:10-12 "Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look."
- Revelation 7:1 "After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree."
- Angels will be subject to judgment
- 1 Corinthians 6:3 "Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!"
